MCMP logoIt’s that time of year again… Just as you thought you’d seen the back of end-of-year lists, the Choice Music Prize comes along to get everyone all riled up again!

Now in its eigth year, the Choice Music Prize was established in 2005 to highlight, promote and showcase the work of Irish bands and artists. What is unique about the Choice Music Prize is that it rewards the music, and no other factor – album sales, live presence, or airplay are not considerations of the judging panel. It’s ALL about the music. Previous Choice Prize winners have been Julie Feeney, The Divine Comedy, Super Extra Bonus Party, Jape, Adrian Crowley, and Two Door Cinema Club… and Jape, again last year!

So who who will be joining the alumni of Choice Music Prize winners for Album of the Year 2012? The nominees are…

In the run up to the big announcement today d’interwebz has been buzzing with thoughts, hopes and predictions – and now that the shortlist has been revealed, the debate will REALLY come to life. The comprehensive 2012 Albums List on the Choice Music Prize website details all of the album releases by Irish artists in 2012 – with such a diverse array of quality music on offer, it’s no wonder that  EVERYONE has their opinions when it comes to the Choice Music Prize… but its the opinions of those on the judging panel that impact on the end result, a mix of representatives from across the Irish music media spectrum, led by The Irish Times’ Tony Clayton-Lea – and I’m impossibly excited to be part of it this year. The judges are:

Mark Kavanagh (Daily Star), KC (Today FM), Aoife Barry (The Ticket/Sweet Oblivion/2XM), Craig Fitzpatrick (Hot Press), Elaine Buckley (RTE TV, State,, Sean Rocks (RTE Radio One’s Arena), Eamonn Sweeney (Irish Independent), Andy Kavanagh (TG4), Steven McCauley (BBC Radio Foyle), Eoghan O’Sullivan (Irish Examiner, The Point Of Everything), Claire Beck (Phantom FM)

The winning album will be announced at the Meteor Choice Music Prize live event in Vicar Street on Thursday 7th March 2013, making the recipient/s €10,000 richer. The event will be broadcast live on the night on Today FM. Tickets for the show go on sale on January 13th priced at €22.50.

The Meteor Irish Song of the Year award returns for a second outing – 10 songs will be shortlisted, with the winner to be determined by public vote via the Meteor Facebook page. The shortlisted songs battling it out for that award will be announced on 30th January 2013.
