Top 5: Poptastic Earworm Singles of 2012

#1 Tegan & Sara – ‘Closer’
Okay, admittedly – I did NOT like this song at first. There was some initial dismayed hatred… and some violent Twitter tirades. Turns out, it’s a grower! It’s been in my head pretty much non-stop, yet I’ll never get the chorus exactly right. Physical / critical / typcial – who knows?!

#2 Solange – ‘Losing You’
We all know Beyoncé is the Queen of the Universe… and now her l’il sister, having tried and failed in the past, is poised and waiting in the wings to bask in some Knowles glory all of her own. This took the internet by storm when it debuted a few months back, and not for good reason – it’s an absolute TUNE.

#3 Rihanna – ‘Diamonds’
Penned by Sia Furler and produced by Stargate, ‘Diamonds’ – the lead single from Unapologetic, Rihanna’s 7th album in as many years – was destined for success even in its embryonic stages. Since it was first unleashed in late September it has been one of her biggest hit singles to date. The album may have been a talking point for all the wrong reasons, but this mid-tempo soul-pop cracker is very much Rihanna in all the right ways.

#4 Kelly Clarkson – ‘Stonger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’
I love Kelly Clarkson. Always have done. Along with Girls Aloud she’s the reality TV star that it’s okay to love – the original, and best. She seems to churn out pop anthems with ease, and 2012 proved no different with the impossibly catchy ‘Stronger’.

#5 Taylor Swift – ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’
I work in childrens TV production. We get a LOT of requests in from kids for music videos to be played on the show I work on, and sadly a lot of the music they request is neither vocally nor visually fit for pre-watershed broadcast (howerya Rihanna). Taylor Swift bucks the trend – a positive role-model for young girls, who doesn’t feel the need to constantly sing about ridin’. This was one of our most requested tracks this year – and as a result, it was constantly in my brain!

  1. […] ‘Closer’, with a cute as bejaysus music video to match – I’ve already made my feelings on this wonder-pop tune very clear, but any excuse to post it again is always […]
